More Flavor = Lower Blood Pressure

Want to improve the flavor of your food and lower your blood pressure? Use herbs and spices liberally in your foods.

In a tasty new study, a daily dose of a mix of herbs and spices significantly reduced blood pressure in those at risk for heart disease. 71 adults with cardiovascular risk factors consumed three different doses of an herb and spice mix daily for four weeks at a time—one low, one moderate and one high. The study subjects otherwise continued their normal diets with no other changes.

The results? Consuming the moderate daily dose (one teaspoon) of the spice mix significantly lowered systolic blood pressure. Consuming the high dose (one and one-half teaspoon) also lowered diastolic blood pressure.

Take home message—Herbs and spices are Mother Nature’s medicines. In addition to adding flavor to your dishes, they protect and improve your health. Talk about a simple and super-quick way to reap rewards—use them, use them, use them!!!
