Blood levels of omega 3 fats, the darlings of the healthy fats, appear to be a powerful predictor of death. In a new report from the on-going and esteemed Framingham Cohort Study, scientists found that having higher blood levels of omega 3 can boost life expectancy by almost five years!
To come to this conclusion, scientists followed the health status and the red blood cell levels of omega 3 fats in 2,240 study subjects over the age of 65 for a period of 11 years. Study subjects with the highest red blood cell levels of omega 3 fats lowered their risk of death by 4.7 years.
These results are quite significant and underscore that small changes in diet, in this case simply eating more omega 3 fats, can translate to a much longer life – specifically on par with quitting smoking! That is a compelling reason to be proactive in including these precious and essential fats in your diet regularly.
