Arginine is an amino acid found in high concentrations in some protein foods, and new research indicates it is a powerful ally to help us fight weight gain and type 2 diabetes. In a series of laboratory experiments, researches from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Cincinnati demonstrated that arginine’s metabolic benefits are due to its ability to boost the production of an intestinal hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1). GLP-1 serves several valuable roles for good health including quieting appetite at the level of the brain and greatly improving glucose metabolism.
