Fabulous News for Fish Oil
In the largest and most comprehensive study to date, scientists confirmed the power of fish oil supplements to protect us from heart disease. For this in-depth review study, scientists combined the results of 40 previously published clinical trials evaluating the impact of fish oil omega 3 fats, DHA and EPA, on cardiac events. The review included over 135,000 study subjects consuming a broad range of fish oil dosages. The conclusion? Fish oil protects the heart! Collectively, study subjects who consumed supplemental EPA and DHA enjoyed the following benefits:
- A 35 percent reduction in fatal heart attacks
- A 13 percent reduction in non-fatal heart attacks
- A 9 percent reduction in any form of heart disease-related death
What’s more, the scientists noted a positive dose response relationship with higher doses offering a greater degree of protection. While consuming oily fish like salmon and sardines is the optimal way to get EPA and DHA, thanks to the presence of other heart-healthy nutrients in the fish, most people don’t come close to consuming adequate amounts of these critical fats.
Thus, high quality fish oil supplements offer a simple and cost-effective way to deliver these life-saving fats to the masses. On days that I do not consume oily fish, I take a high-quality fish oil supplement at a dose of around 2 grams (DHA + EPA). Keep in mind that these fats are also essential for brain health, vision health, fetal development, and keeping the lid on dangerous inflammation in the body.
