What You Need to Know About Diet and Regular Soda and Death Risk
Do you think that moderate consumption of soda, regular or diet, is safe? Think again. A powerful new study links both to a higher risk of death.
For this evaluation researchers followed the beverage habits and health status of over 450,000 Europeans for an average of 16 years. Here were the highlights of this sobering analysis:
- Relative to study subjects who consumed less than one glass of regular or diet soda per month, those consuming two or more glasses of either per day had a higher risk of all-cause mortality.
- Drinking two or more glasses of diet soda a day was also tied to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Drinking two or more glasses of regular soda a day was also tied to a higher risk of digestive diseases.
These results are not surprising. Neither beverage contains anything of benefit, and both contain compounds that have been directly tied to the disruption of healthy bodily functions, most notably sugar, artificial sweeteners, phosphoric acid, and coloring agents.
