Black vs. Green Tea – Which Is Better?

Both black and green teas are exceptionally healthy beverages.  Black, green, oolong and white tea all come from the same plant – Camellia Sinensis – Their differences are created in the fermentation process.  All varieties are loaded with super potent antioxidants called catechins.

The robust antioxidant activity of tea is the source of its health protective powers which include a stunning array of great things like decreasing cardiovascular risk, boosting immunity, protecting cognitive function, enhancing metabolism and decreasing stress hormones levels.

Green tea seems to have a very slight healthy edge over black tea etc based on my knowledge of the science.  Many experts believe this is simply due to the fact that we have studied green tea the most which seems logical.

The one definite difference between green and black in the realm of health relates to a chemical called EGCG.  EGCG is present in high concentrations in green tea but not black because it is destroyed during the extended fermentation processes that is part of producing black tea.  EGCG is sort of a miracle worker in the lab and is one of the most potent antioxidants ever discovered.  Bottom line – any freshly brewed tea from the Camellia leaf is great for you.  For best results – steep for at least 3 minutes and squeeze the bag at the end of steeping to get all the catechins you can, don’t add milk, cream or sugar and drink daily!
