Vitamin D Vital for Avoiding Heart Disease

Maintaining optimal levels of vitamin D is essential for avoiding heart disease. That was the conclusion from a first-of-its-kind study involving 267,980 study subjects.

For this study scientists used a sophisticated technique called non-linear Mendelian randomization analyses across all study subjects to assess how increasing vitamin D levels impacted heart disease. They were able to show a clear and direct relationship between blood levels of vitamin D and heart disease.

Their findings showed that those with low vitamin D levels were significantly more likely to suffer from high blood pressure and other forms of heart disease relative to subjects with normal blood levels. Specifically, those with vitamin D deficiency were more than twice as likely to suffer from heart disease vs. those with sufficient levels.

These findings are notable as up to half of the US population is deficient or insufficient in vitamin D. Given that vitamin D is so vital for heart health, as well as protection from Covid, everyone should be proactive in ensuring that they get their vitamin D.
