The benefits of physical activity are so potent and work so quickly that it is never too late to reap its remarkable rewards. In a new study that carefully monitored the physical activity levels of almost 3,500 elderly adults over an eight-year period, those who became physically active after the study began were more than three times as likely to be “healthy agers” as those who remained inactive. “Healthy agers” were defined as those free of a major chronic disease and disability, and with good mental and cognitive health. Study subjects who were physically active throughout the entire study period, were seven times as likely to be healthy agers vs. those who remained consistently inactive. These results speak volumes and are consistent with a mountain of dazzling scientific findings that show that regular exercise really is the real fountain of youth. Please do not squander your potential for exuberant life and vitality by not moving! (British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2013; DOI: 10.1136/bjsports-2013-092993)
