Adding salt to prepared food is a learned behavior primarily triggered by seeing and having ready access to a salt shaker. As a simple strategy to reduce your sodium intake, rid your house completely of salt shakers. If it’s not there, it is not an option. We are currently consuming 50 percent more salt than we did in the 70’s and if each of us reduced our salt intake by just one gram a day (we currently average 10 a day) there would be 250,000 less new cases of heart disease and more than 200,000 lives saved over a decade.
