Eat Fish for a Longer Life
As proteins go, fish appears to be a winner for adding life to your years and years to your life. In a study that followed the diets and health status of over 421,000 adults over a 16-year period, those consuming the most fish and long-chained omega 3-fats (healthy fats unique to seafood) were significantly less likely to die from a host of life-robbing diseases. Here were the exciting specifics:
Relative to study subjects consuming the least fish, those with highest intakes were:
- Men – 10 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease (CVD), 6 percent less likely to die of cancer, 20 percent less likely to die of lung disease, and 37 percent less likely to die of liver disease.
- Women – 10 percent less likely to die of CVD and 37 percent less likely to die of Alzheimer’s disease.
Strive to consume one serving of fish, preferably oily fish like
salmon, at least twice a week. More is better. But hold the fried fish! In this evaluation, there were no benefits from eating fried fish. To the contrary, eating fried fish was tied to a shorter life and a greater risk of heart and lung disease.
