Vitamin D for Better Mental Health and Less Depression
Past studies have linked low levels of vitamin D with depression, and this evaluation adds to the growing pile of evidence that adequate levels of vitamin D are fundamental to good mental health. This evaluation included over 7,000 British subjects and found those with vitamin D levels in the normal range had a 43% lower risk of depression vs. those whose levels were deficient. Higher blood levels of vitamin D were also associated with a 67% lower risk of panic attacks. Vitamin D receptors are located throughout the brain so we know it plays an important role in brain health. Anyone with a history of depression or mental health issues should have their blood levels of vitamin D monitored and take vitamin D supplements as needed to maintain a normal level throughout the year.
