Take the Pressure Off with Kefir

Fermented foods are rockin’ for health and one of my favorites, kefir, may be an especially wise choice for those concerned with high blood pressure. Past studies have indicated that dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut bacteria, may be a cause of high blood pressure. Additionally, studies have shown that probiotics, supplements of beneficial bacteria, can lower high blood pressure.
Kefir
For this new evaluation, scientists studied three groups of lab rats. Group 1 consisted of rats with high blood pressure treated with daily kefir; group 2 consisted of rats with high blood pressure not treated with kefir; group 3 consisted of rats with normal blood pressure not treated with kefir (the control group). At the end of this 9-week study, the rats with high blood pressure treated with kefir experienced a host of benefits. They included:
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower blood levels of endotoxin (toxic compounds released by gut bacteria that can enter the bloodstream)
  • Improved gut barrier function
  • A healthier balance in gut bacteria
  • An increase in a vital brain protein required for normal nervous system function
These exciting results imply that kefir favorably impacts the all-important gut-brain axis that we now recognize defines our health destiny.
I am wildly enthusiastic about kefir. Click here to see all the reasons why!
