The Magic of Time Restricted Eating (TRE)–What TRE Is and How to Do It

What is Time Restricted Eating and how do you do it?

Today’s tip actually fits directly into the “eat real food” directive, but it also has benefits for the other directives, namely “nurture your microbiome”, “join me in moving daily”, and “yes to restorative sleep”.  And that would be the exciting topic of Time Restricted Eating, “TRE” for short. TRE is smoking hot in scientific circles and deservedly so. As the name suggests, Time Restricted Eating is simply limiting your eating to an 8 to 10-hour time frame each day. Meaning, with TRE, all of your food is eaten within a 8 to 10-hour window, ideally before the sun goes down.

For example, eating all of your food between 10 am and 6 pm. According to a slew of published studies, TRE appears to have far-reaching positive effects throughout the body. And it is easy to do! The health benefits for TRE noted in the studies thus far include:

  • greater longevity (that’s slower aging)
  • enhanced stress resiliency
  • improved blood sugar regulation
  • lower blood pressure
  • less inflammation
  • improved blood lipids (cholesterol, etc.)
  • weight loss
  • improved memory
  • improved sleep

That is one impressive list!

Scientists believe TRE’s sweeping health benefits relate to a process called “metabolic switching.” Simply stated, when cells use up all of their available sugar fuel, namely glucose, they must switch to burning fat. It seems TRE triggers and enhances this “metabolic switching”, which itself ignites a host of protective processes at the cellular level, ultimately translating to health improvements.

Thus, “metabolic switching” is great for all-over health at the cellular level–and TRE triggers it. I have become wildly enthusiastic about TRE both from reading the positive studies, as well as seeing its results in those I counsel and in my own life. I strive to utilize TRE most days.  My experience is that it works, and people find it relatively easy to adhere to.
