In an eye-opening study that puts a whole new spin on sleep and wellbeing, investigators found that improving sleep quality over time boosts health and happiness on par with winning the lottery! For this study researchers followed the sleep patterns of 30,500 UK adults for a period of four years. Study subjects who reported better sleep over the four-year study period scored significantly higher on standardized tests that measure emotional and physical wellbeing, as well as day-to-day functionality.
Putting the results into a more tangible perspective, the researchers reported that the uptick in mental and physical health tied to better sleep was equivalent to winning a jackpot of around 200,000 pounds. In contrast, the researchers found that inadequate sleep, poor quality sleep, and use of sleep medication was linked to a significant deterioration in physical and emotional wellbeing.
