In a new report that combined the results from 11 previous studies to provide a more accurate and robust answer, the verdict was indeed eye-opening. We eat more (lots more!) when we do not get enough sleep. Relative to study subjects with normal sleep, those whose sleep was restricted to five and a half hours or less a night ate 365 more calories the following day. That is the equivalent of a hefty piece of cheesecake! We know more than ever about what it takes to control body weight and getting adequate sleep is right up there at the top of the list.
